Billingham Bears Take Centre Stage

Leading the players out onto the pitch today are the Billingham Bears U13s, who will form the Guard of Honour for this afternoon’s match against Sheffield Tigers.

This talented group of young players represent the future of Billingham Rugby Club, showing fantastic commitment, teamwork, and enthusiasm every time they pull on the shirt. Week in, week out, they’re developing their skills, building friendships, and embracing everything that makes rugby such a special game.

The whole club is proud of how they’re progressing, and it’s brilliant to see them involved in a matchday like today. Enjoy the experience, lads — and remember, this is where the journey starts!

Club President's Welcome

JOHN KER

CLUB PRESIDENT

It's my pleasure to welcome all today's visitors to Billingham Rugby Club.

Whether you are a player, a committee representative or a loyal fan we give you whole hearted greetings. We shall endeavour to treat you well both on and off the pitch, regardless of the final outcome of the game.

As we enter our 102nd season, after over twenty years at Greenwood Road plus eight years with the AGP we are going from strength to strength. Junior and mini numbers remain high with girls as well as boys making Sundays a constant whirl of activity.

Actually I am still recovering from the final game of last season when the bonus point gained secured our place in this league. For twenty minutes we played scintillating rugby and quite frankly we were unstoppable. Of course the reward is to do it all again for a third season; at least we know what to expect, playing at Level Four in a professional league.

Each year I show my appreciation and thanks to the strong leadership, both on the field and off it. We are very proud of all our many volunteers who help keep the club moving forward. That includes all the managers and coaches in the Youth Section who are all volunteers too.

It's difficult in a one-off piece to react to weekly events, however Chairman Mark Armstrong and DoR Peter Evans do change their contributions game by game, so a special thanks to both.

In conclusion, after two hard seasons we are still up for the fight. A third season at this level does not daunt us and we still hope to establish ourselves permanently in NATIONAL 2 NORTH.

Director of Rugby Performance Update

PETER EVANS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY PERFORMANCE

Back at home and a must win.

Game 8 of the first block. After pre season playing 8 games on the bounce is a tough ask for anyone outside of the professional environment. The lads have worked their socks off and deserve a week off but a big win is needed prior.

A tough one on the road last week plenty to learn from and plenty of positives. Deserved a point but didn’t get one so we move on.

Sheffield Tigers have always and will always be a tough fixture, always physical and a solid set piece it looks like they have a bit more about them in terms of endeavour and running rugby this season. So hopefully we will see two teams going at it back and forth. We welcome back a few faces this week which is always nice and a few to return after the break.

The Lions have been in some good form getting some needed wins and blooding some young talent along the way. It is great to see the colts stepping up and being the shining light. It is a big step up today and facing a resurgent DMP, we lost a close game earlier in the season but hopefull of turning that around.

It’s a big weekend and time for us to deliver on both pitches, as always get down and make some noise.

It’s a goodbye for now to Luke Armstrong who is on his travels, for a man that hates rugby he has stuck around for years. We will be sporting a few bits of Australian themed clothing to send him off. Live music and pints flowing not much better!

TEAM NOTICES

Lions Look to Keep Their Momentum

The Lions are back in action at Greenwood Road today as they take on Darlington Mowden Park.

With confidence high after a string of strong performances, the team will be aiming to maintain their fine form and make another big statement this weekend.

There’s a great blend of experience and youth in the squad, with some familiar faces returning to the lineup alongside the next generation of Colts stepping up to make their mark. It’s a reflection of the strength in depth throughout the club and the exciting talent coming through the ranks.

Expect power, strength, and speed across the park as the Lions look to deliver another impressive performance on home turf.

Billingham Rugby Club Launches Injured Players Benevolent Fund

Billingham Rugby Club Launches Injured Players Benevolent Fund

After much discussion, Billingham Rugby Club is pleased to announce the launch of the Injured Players Benevolent Fund. This new initiative is designed to support players who are injured, providing assistance to those who need it most.

How will the fund build?

From March 22, 2025, the club introduced a change to its plastic glasses refund policy. Instead of offering refunds, £1 from the cost of the first glass will be donated to the Injured Players Benevolent Fund. Refills will remain free (drink charge still applicable), and customers can still return their cups as usual. This is just the first of several initiatives aimed at raising funds for the cause.

The club is excited to launch this initiative and thanks you for your continued support in helping us assist injured players.
